on Night Vale: "Cookies"

b5 shadow
Sooooo this latest ep of Welcome to Night Vale...!

The ep itself was middling, not much of a plot, though it did ratchet up the StrexCorp vs Night Vale tension another notch. But as far as headcanon material went it was dynamite - loud, unstable and possibly destructive?

New facts: Cecil has a niece, Janice. Said niece has a mother, and a step-father, who is apparently Steve Carlsberg.

Possibly Cecil has a sister he's never mentioned before; but he only refers to Janice's mother as that, her mother. It seems more likely that Janice is Cecil's niece by the brother he didn't remember having in "Cassette" (I can totally believe that Cecil had no trouble with having a niece while having no memory of a sibling) and then the brother's wife remarried after ????? to the brother. Which may explain why Cecil hates Steve Carlsberg so (and doesn't preclude Steve actually being Cecil's friend, or formerly his friend...)

It also explains why Steve Carlsberg is involved with the PTA (Cecil claims Steve isn't on top of his stepfatherly duties, but not being an expert at helping your daughter sell girl scout cookies isn't exactly a cardinal sin of parenting...)

Carlos is allergic to cats, Carlos and Cecil are either living together by this point, or else Carlos is spending a significant amount of time at Cecil's place, since Cecil got Carlos allergy meds as part of bringing Khoshekh home to recuperate.

Dana!!! We now know Dana is around 22 years old (maybe the first character we know the age of!), and apparently is going to return to Night Vale from the mountain by the time she's 29. And by then she will have become somebody important.

...Possibly the Voice of Night Vale??? But then what happens to Cecil????

Cecil has learned a little caution - he didn't give Janice's name to Strex. And Tamika Flynn's revolution continues.

(And Cecil so thinks he's being subtle in his support for them. Oh Cecil, sweetheart, you are many things, some of them wonderful, many of them terrifying; but subtle is not among their number...)

Ahhh this show! The problem with fanning on a canon this incredibly open and vague is that every new ep can shake the pieces up, entirely rearrange them on the board...my current WiP is not quite jossed yet but it's only a matter of time, I'm sure. Fortunately this is Night Vale, which has room and weirdness enough for a multitude of contradictory realities...

See, I had always assumed that Cecil's brother vanished when he was fairly young himself (like late teens) so it seemed unlikely to me that he was the husband to Janice's mother. But then again, time is relative in Night Vale so this can totally be the solution. My other thought was that after Cecil's mom and brother vanished, he was raised with a family or someone who had a daughter so Cecil considers her a sister despite not being related by blood. That, or Cecil is just an unofficial uncle for whatever reason.

I like the idea that Cecil and Steve were on good terms until Steve became the new stepdad. Cecil's hatred for Steve is so lunatic so a part of me wants it to remain as is without any sort of explanation but if there is to be one, I like the idea of them having a falling out (or rather Cecil falling out with Steve since Steve clearly still likes him if the crossover episode is to be taken as part of the canon) over Steve marrying Janice's mother.

Steve Carlsberg was going to get a mention in "Stranger" but after this episode I'm tempted to have him make a brief appearance. This show! THIS. SHOW.

And Cecil so thinks he's being subtle in his support for them. Oh Cecil, sweetheart, you are many things, some of them wonderful, many of them terrifying; but subtle is not among their number...

There was a point where I was like, "CECIL STOP TALKING."

I'm pleased to hear that Khoshekh is on the mend. Cecil's description of getting to hold Khoshekh as a tiny silver lining to his whole ordeal was incredibly sweet.

and apparently is going to return to Night Vale from the mountain by the time she's 29. And by then she will have become somebody important.

When I heard this, I was rather worried that Dana was allowed to return to Night Vale only after becoming a StrexCorp employee. So someone "important" but now completely soulless. Mainly because I really loved Cecil's reply that Dana had always been important which to me sounded a little like not being brainwashed into believing having an important job made you important.

My first thought was sister, but then Cecil doesn't mention the mother any more at all in any context, nor does Strex threaten her, just Janice. Which makes me think Cecil's niece is related to him through her father. Also, Steve being the step-father instead of just the father - story-wise, there's no real reason to mention that detail unless it's because the original father is the one related to Cecil?

I thought Cecil's brother disappeared when his mother did, so while I have no idea how old the brother was (I've been assuming from behavior that it was Cecil's older brother) I was thinking under 20. But that doesn't preclude him disappearing and then returning! Or maybe Janice's mother turned up in town a decade ago and told Cecil, here, this is your niece, and Cecil went !!! OMG BABY GIRL SO CUTE! and didn't question past that?

Yesss I prefer Cecil's Steve-hatred to remain inexplicable, but this explanation works pretty well for me, because it's still (possibly) petty and silly on Cecil's part. Cecil's pettiness just amuses me so much!

And yay, my vote is definitely for a Steve-scene - always can have more Steve Carlsberg! :D

Ahhh see I've been assuming that in 6 years the Strex situation will be resolved. And that Cecil's reply about Dana being always important was talking about her potential - that whoever she becomes is someone she was always capable of being (...and if the City Hall tablets prophecize her becoming the Voice, as they did with Cecil...?) My sibs thought she might be becoming Mayor, though - or something else entirely? But at least she makes it home! (...in some timeline, anyway...)

ETA: and awwww Cecil finally getting to hold Khoshekh...(hope he watched out for those spine ridges!)

I'm always surprised at how much I love Steve Carlsberg despite Cecil absolutely loathing him. Or maybe it's because he loathes him so much that I feel like Steve is kind of awesome.

Cecil would do something like that. Just not question at all about having an insta-family.

After all the loose ends and cliffhangers Cranor and Fink have left dangling, I feel like the Strex story will never end.

Hi, I followed you here from Ao3 - hope that's okay!

And, oh wow, this episode! Cecil has a *niece*! I'm now kind of wondering if Janice is his brother's and Janice's mom just showed up one day and told Cecil "you have a niece" and he was all "omg omg what a cute baby! I have a niece!" without questioning his lack of sibling. Also, it just struck me that Cecil's *sister* could have been married/partnered with Janice's mom (instead of Janice's mom herself). Cecil could have a whole family that he's forgotten about/not mentioned/lost to the Void!

As for jossing...*looks at 42 pages of AU where Cecil is in a long-term. very dysfunctional relationship with Steve Carlsberg and sighs*

Hee, always happy to have more WTNV fans around!

I admit I'm hoping Janice is Cecil's brother's child, or at least that her mother is not Cecil's sister, because that he's never mentioned her before at all would bother me (not that he has a sister, but that she means little enough to him to have not come up before this and he doesn't even give her name now...) While as Janice being his brother's child, which made perfect sense to him despite him not remembering having a brother - that just sounds like Cecil! XD

And yeah, I feel your pain, my own version of Steve has been jossed as well...though him having a family connection to Cecil definitely appeals! (I can't help it, I love Steve Carlsberg for no good reason...)

Yay! (Also, sorry for dropping off the internet and then commenting on stuff again - work last week was crazy.) I've friended you, if that's okay.

I can totally see Cecil being perfectly fine with having a niece but no sibling! And Carlos being "But - but - that's not how families work...right, this is Night Vale, pass me the adult beverage."

STEEEEEEEEVE. I kinda love him too. And I guess my AU is still possible, since it is, after all, an AU....

Friending is fine, welcome aboard! (I don't post all that much but feel free to comment anytime)

Night Vale is made for AUs - the canon is so bendy anyway, I don't see any problem with twisting it to suit a story (especially if it means more Steve! ;)
