SGA fic: more Pern-fic! oh noes!

So I'm supposed to be working on my story for sga_genficathon, but after a bit of a rough start on that, I went and wrote this instead. Oops?

It's a sequel to On the Wings of Imagination, aka Rodney's accidental Impression, aka the SGA/Pern fusion AU of DOOM. (Not, mind, the sequel I intended to write, which will go somewhere between that first story and this one). As such, warnings for a bit of crack, and h/c, and also cute overload. Seriously, I fear I've been writing too much angst lately, and this happened as some kind of reaction. Diabetics beware.

SGA: With Healing in His Wings {~6,900 words}
PG; SGA/Pern fusion, h/c, fluff
In which a certain bronze-rider and his very special dragon visit a hold, make a couple new friends, and undermine civilization as we know it; and Rodney eats something he shouldn't have.

*flails madly*

This is so, so good. I'm over the moon that you decided to continue the series. I love all the little details, and that Rodney's still Rodney, making Miko cry even when he's being nice. The tone of Shepparth's voice is absolutely spot on, and I love Carson calling him 'beastie'. Just perfect.

So much enjoyed, thanks.

*bounces happily*

Hee - so glad you enjoyed it! ^_^ I've been wanting to do more with this 'verse, but there's so many other things I want to write, too, that I haven't had the time. And this ambushed me, so there you go. The chances are very high there will be more, eventually!

Especially happy you liked Carson's "beastie". Since my other stories are 4th season, this was my first time really writing the good doctor, so...

(now, I just gotta ask - your icon is the greatest thing ever, but where did it come from???)

The title! It's slaying me.

OMG, this whole thing, it's so, so cute. And... gratuitous anaphylactic shock!! That will never get old. Oh, Rodney. With a dragon. And Carson! Eeee~! ♥
Mar. 24th, 2008 05:48 pm (UTC)
The title's actually a Bible quote - I searched Bartlett's for 'wings' and it fit just too well ^^;

Really, this fandom needs more gratuitous anaphylactic shock!

\o/ awesome! \o/

I am SO glad you decided to keep writing these! I love how Sheppard's in character even as a dragon, and I really want to see Rodney convincing Benden and the other weirs that he should still be a Smith. Thanks for writing this!
Mar. 25th, 2008 01:03 pm (UTC)
I really would love to write more in this 'verse, just am waiting for inspiration to strike! Sheppard's too much fun with wings (and I have to give him a chance to actually fly sometime!)
Mar. 24th, 2008 06:13 pm (UTC)
I had a blast reading your story.
Mar. 25th, 2008 01:03 pm (UTC)
Thank you!
Mar. 24th, 2008 06:24 pm (UTC)
yay! Pern. I love Pern. Rodney is great - and Sheppard!dragon freaking out - wonderful :) heh. I'm such a sucker for the h/c! Thanks for writing more crack!au :)
Mar. 25th, 2008 01:04 pm (UTC)
I've always loved Pern - and h/c - it's great to know I'm not alone in my predilections ^^
Mar. 24th, 2008 06:48 pm (UTC)
I don't know how I missed the first part of this, but somehow I did. And, I love your idea of Sheppard as a dragon (not to mention Rodney his rider). :) Great stories. ♥
Mar. 25th, 2008 01:05 pm (UTC)
I never posted the first story anywhere but flashfic and my lj - glad you enjoyed it, now that you've found it! ^^
Mar. 24th, 2008 07:05 pm (UTC)
I started to flail even BEFORE reading this.

Flailing happily! Allergies! "Beastie"! Carson! Miko crying due to Rodney! Rodney undermining civilization as we know it- AGAIN!

Love it, so much! Thanks for writing more.
Mar. 25th, 2008 01:06 pm (UTC)
Thank you! flailing after is even better than flailing before, but I'm touched either way. Oh, Rodney, you wreak such delightful havoc in all universes!
Mar. 24th, 2008 07:22 pm (UTC)
Yayyyyy! I absolutely loved the first part of this, and so I'm very very very thrilled and overjoyed that you've decided to continue it. And now, selfishly, I really really hope you decide to keep on with this :) :)
Mar. 25th, 2008 01:06 pm (UTC)
Eee, I'm so glad you enjoyed it - and yeah, I'm rather partial to continuing it myself, as long as inspiration strikes...they're all just too much fun like this ^^
Mar. 24th, 2008 07:45 pm (UTC)
You would not believe the happy squeal of delight I made when I saw this post. *giggles*

And this is a lovely, lovely story. You're doing a fabulous job of keeping the SGA characters in character and keeping true to the feel of Pern. Totally awesome. :)
Mar. 25th, 2008 01:07 pm (UTC)
Hee, I'm so glad it continues to entertain - and that everyone sounds like themselves, in spite of their, er, slightly altered circumstances (or species ^^)
Mar. 24th, 2008 08:17 pm (UTC)
Oh wow! This is great, one of the best AU I have read in this fandom, and medieval and dragons, two of my fav things, yay! Not to mention Sheppard and McKay! *big hug* Please write more, you are an incredible writer and I wait anxiously for your every written word. Love this fic, more, please!
Mar. 25th, 2008 01:09 pm (UTC)
Well, Pern isn't quite medieval (the books are actually (nominally) scifi, it's a planet colonized by humans thousands of years prior who have since lost most of their tech but are slowly rediscovering it...which means I can fudge all sorts of science details ^^) But hee, Rodney & John are fun in any form! There probably will be more of this, hope you continue to enjoy it - thank you!
Mar. 24th, 2008 08:37 pm (UTC)
This is so awesome I have no words.

Much love.
Mar. 25th, 2008 01:09 pm (UTC)
Eee, thank you! ^^

*spontaneously combusts from the cute*

I'm so glad you revisited this 'verse! Shepparth the drawling, lazy dragon! Miko of Kyohtt Hold! O'Neill and Danielth! XD (Okay, now I can't help imagining Danielth the anthropologist, pacifist dragon, driving his O'Neill NUTS.)

heeee~! Anyway! Obviously, sick, vulnerable Rodney, and worried Sheppar(th) are just about my favorite thing *ever*, and I love Shepparth's gentleness with him and, of course, ripping a hole in the tower to get him out, and terrifying everyone ...! And Carson hearing him (I can't remember from the books, can dragons normally talk to people other than their riders, or is that a Shepparth thing?) and his tolerant-affectionate attitude towards both of them. And the whole thing with Miko and the drawings -- I guessed where it was going, but that's just *neat*, and I love Rodney's typical obliviousness, never having noticed there aren't female Smiths and not taking Miko's "... but I can't!" for an answer.
Mar. 25th, 2008 01:16 pm (UTC)
Hee, so glad you enjoyed it! even with the spontaneous combustion...yeah, I love angst, but sometimes I just need cute. ...and h/c, of course. They go hand-in-hand with me, naturally ^^

(Kyohtt is actually an in-joke with myself - for some reason natives of Kyoto pronounce it that way, losing the final "o" sound. It's only folks from the city itself and oddly none of them seem to notice they do it...!)

I am having way, way too much fun turning people into dragons. (T'alc rides either Cameroth or Mitcheth - I haven't decided on the name. And Samantha rides Elizabeth...um, yes, I might be thinking about this too much ^^;)

In the books, it's implied that dragons *can* talk to other people if they really have to (they talk to the Masterharper when he has a heart attack at one point) but it's highly irregular. I haven't actually decided if this is Carson's talent, or Shepparth acting out. (Shepparth also talks to Teyla on occasion, and Ronon when they finally meet up with him, and ...yep, definitely too much ^^;)
Mar. 24th, 2008 09:21 pm (UTC)
I am LOVING this. Pern was one of the first long fantasy series I ever got into, and this is just a perfect mash-up.

(Will we ever get to see Shepparth in a mating flight? Maybe with Katie Brown as a junior queen's rider? *grin*)
Mar. 25th, 2008 01:18 pm (UTC)
Hee, so glad you're enjoying it! Pern was one of my own first experiences with the genre, so it's much fun to homage/riff/whatever I'm doing to it!

(The series is pretty much gen in my mind...or really wacky McShep...but who knows where it'll go! Though Shepparth is more interested in flying Thread than flying queens anyway...)

Mar. 25th, 2008 01:49 pm (UTC)
Hee, glad you enjoyed it! Yup, only Carson would call a bronze dragon a "wee beastie" ^^
Mar. 24th, 2008 09:46 pm (UTC)
Woohoo! Rodney's so... Rodney, in any universe! And O'Neill's "Danielth" made me snort coffee. And Carson the Healer Scholar!

I loved the first installment, and this was an excellent sequel. I hope you do more in this AU. The Pern books were my introduction to science fiction, too. :-)
Mar. 25th, 2008 01:51 pm (UTC)
I think that's what makes SGA AUs so fun - all the chars, but Rodney especially, are utterly recognizable no matter where you put them.

So glad you enjoyed the sequel - I probably will be doing more, eventually ^^
Mar. 24th, 2008 09:56 pm (UTC)
These were great! I read the Pern books like a billion times in middle school, and this brought back a ton of memories. The guys were still so them--even with John as a dragon, sweet.
Mar. 25th, 2008 01:52 pm (UTC)
You, too, huh? I think imagining I had a queen was the only way I survived 7th grade ^^;

And John makes such a wonderful dragon, no? XSD
Mar. 24th, 2008 10:27 pm (UTC)
I want more, dammit
I adore the Pern series, and yeah, it was one of the first to get me hooked into fantasy.
Wonderfully written, and I wonder who Rodney might eventually hook up with?
Miko? No, no, she's too afraid of Shepparth... she needs to develop lots of confidence on her own, yet.
Personally, I'm rooting for Carson. Heh.
Please tell me you'll write more in this verse? Pretty please?
Mar. 25th, 2008 01:53 pm (UTC)
Re: I want more, dammit
*laughs* I know the books are borderline harlequin romance, but this series is mostly gen in my mind (...though Rodney keeps trying to get Shepparth to fly Samantha's gold Elizabeth. I think Shepparth would rather fly Thread than a Queen, though XD)

I can't absolutely promise I'll write more - but I would like to, if the inspiration hits again!
Mar. 24th, 2008 10:30 pm (UTC)
Damn you Pern! Why won't you leave me alone?!

Seriously though, I feel bad for the weyrleaders who have to put up with Rodney. And this sentence? Well, almost half, since I'm in the male half, and that'll throw the proportions off just about killed me. This whole thing is awesome and wrong, but mostly awesome.
Mar. 25th, 2008 01:54 pm (UTC)
Heeee...I haven't read Pern for years, kind of fear where it's at these days, with the endless sequels. But the original books made middle school bearable!

And so glad you liked that line, I was kinda partial to it myself...oh, Rodney. ^^
Mar. 24th, 2008 11:10 pm (UTC)
Oh dear! I don't know how I managed to entirely miss the first one of these, but I nearly died when I saw this post this afternoon. Had to go to the original first. Have just finished that, and it made a great break in a tiring and busy work day. As with everyone else who commented both on the first story and on this one so far, I love how you managed to perfectly maintain Rodney's, Sheppard's, and Teyla's characters and voices in the Pern universe, as well as so totally capture the enchanting feel of Pern and a Hatching and McCaffrey's books. I loved,
"No--nonono no NO!" he said 'succinctly.' The hatchling cocked his head to the other side. Yes, he replied even more succinctly."
Great fun! I enjoyed it way too much! Can't wait to read the new one later this evening.
Mar. 25th, 2008 01:21 pm (UTC)
Have now read the new one, too. Very cute and fluffy and fun. Is Miko an OC, or should I be remembering her from either Pern or SGA? 'Cuz if so, I don't. I quite enjoyed Rodney's interactions with her. Shepparth's fierce protection of R'ney is very nice, and Carson is... just very Carson. You know how I love him ("Beastie" is perfect!). Also love the references to O'Neill and Danielth and R'dek (his name works very nicely; very Pernish) and Lornth (although somehow I see Radek with a female dragon). Great fun!

I hope the joy in writing these is truly breaking you out of your general mid-winter writing slump and that getting them out of your system will help you focus on the stories you truly want to tell now that spring is here. {{{BIG HUGS}}}

Hee, thanks! I've never written Miko before, and now I'm all fond of this version. Actually I'd not really written Carson, either...but they're all so much fun in this 'verse!
Mar. 25th, 2008 01:56 am (UTC)
How did I miss this the first time?!? I love it when Miko does something besides cry -- undermining civilization FTW! \o/
Mar. 25th, 2008 02:01 pm (UTC)
This was my first time doing anything with Miko, and now I'm all fond of this version and wanting to do more with her... ^^
Mar. 25th, 2008 02:05 am (UTC)
Is awesome! But...when in the modern timeframe are you putting it? Since...well...Fandarel does have a girl smith, his granddaughter Jancis.

*scrolls back up to read it again and is still in love*
Mar. 25th, 2008 02:04 pm (UTC)
Glad you enjoyed it! (are enjoying it! hee! XD)

Ahh, yes, I knew there were female smiths eventually, but I couldn't remember when they came in! These stories are set somewhere around the time of The White Dragon</s>...I've been cagey about the exact timeline because I haven't read the books in so long, I don't recall them exactly, and I don't have my copies with me now. Does Jancis get mentioned before All the Weyrs? Because that's quite a few Turns after this story...
Mar. 25th, 2008 02:18 am (UTC)
I love it so much I don't know how to tell you how much I love it so. Eeeeeeeee!!! So awesome. Yay!
Mar. 25th, 2008 02:04 pm (UTC)
Hee, thank you, I am so glad you enjoyed it so! ^_^
