Hello guys!

Still alive, and I really wanted to get around to responding to comments to the last post, but work ate me alive - until last night, I hadn't slept in three or four weeks so much as setting the alarm for a 3, 4 hour-long nap each night (and the big huge difference between that and actually going to bed, honest-to-God going to sleep is that when you nap, you never really put things down, and the fact that I kept waking up before my alarm went off probably just goes to prove that).

Did you know that when you've been running on fumes for too long, you actually get blanks in your consciousness when you turn your head too quickly? (And my temper when I'm that tired - let's just say that "whiting out with rage" can actually be literal.)

I finally got 8 hours of sleep last night. My subconscious had such a field day. The dream symbolism couldn't have been more obvious if it smacked me in the face with a frying pan.

Anyway, shortish note to say that I'm still breathing, still stupidly in love with the Tenth Doctor, and sleep is the most amazing thing in the universe. Pretty much.

FIC: So Easy to Love (part two)

Title: So Easy to Love

Pair: Kadam

Summary: The Adam’s Apples are performing on a cruise liner when an explosion in the engines causes it to go down. Adam and Kurt escape on their own and try to survive until help can come.

AN: After “Boys (And Girls) On Film,” Kurt and Adam did NOT get together. So AU from there.

This isn’t actually a duet, but they’re singing it as one.

You’d Be So Easy to Love/I Get a Kick Out of You

Part Two

“I’m trying to think of a jaunty tune for the fishing portion of our musical.” Kurt raked his eyes up and down Adam’s body. With his shirt destroyed to create a tourniquet and a bandage for Kurt’s head, Adam had been shirtless since before they’d found the island. Sadly, Kurt had only been able to appreciate this fact for a few hours.

This got longer than I’d planned for short fic where Adam loses his shirt.

Part One

Kurt should have know when someone on the crew had referred to the liner as the “Ship of Dreams” they were doomed.

Things that I do and I don't want to admit:

I didn't want to download Amazon's Cloud Player. I updated to iTunes latest version (what a mistake that was) and ended up with, unasked, their cloud. It's seeded with disconcerting songs I don't want. (But I do readily admit the Doctor Horrible songs were a smart call.)

Then I found Amazon had all the music I'd ever bought from them.

Including music I lost to my ex, WG.

Oh.

Sheepishly I downloaded it, even after being slightly obnoxious to the Amazon chat-rep, "What do you mean I have to download the cloud player when my download yesterday didn't work, I don't want the cloud player, why, iTunes' cloud is irritating, gimme my ninety-nine cent refund" -- oops, the song I'm trying to buy is there already, like you said. Oh, I'm sooo not confessing this.

Then I discovered the music is Tangerine Dream I bought for WG.

A pang of loss startled me. Combined with something I never admitted to WG: relief. I was never fond of his Tangerine Dream. They're okay. Just ... boring.

What I also don't want to admit: I like them better now than I did when I pretended to like them.

Happy = good?

I've been very happy lately. Inexplicably. Well, almost inexplicably. I have cats.

When Yangthang Rinpoche was here, a friend from my retreat in 2011 flew in from California. We'd had a couple of long talks during the retreat.

The retreat itself was great. Intense, a lot of work, a lot of personal change--difficult, but in a BOO-YAH! kind of way.

So my friend asked me if I was feeling any better.

Hunh?

Apparently I didn't seem "happy" at the time. Well... no, of course it was hard. But I look back on this retreat as Great and didn't understand the question until I was driving home today. He thought that I was doing better when I was happier.

Where did we get the idea that happy = good?

I've been happy lots of times, mostly while watching sci-fi with a cat in my lap. Not accomplishing jack. There's nothing wrong with being happy. I enjoy it. But the times I'm happiest *about* are the so-called tough times when I've gone through a lot of personal change.

On the way home from work it hit me: that's what Shantideva meant. He didn't just mean that one *should* be happy to have enemies. He was genuinely pleased at his personal change. BOO-YAH!

Star Trek, Into Darkness: Top 5 Moments

I'm still giddy with this movie even as I hear I mixed reviews pouring in. I totally get how fans of the old series and movies might be annoyed with this. It is like fan fiction to a certain extent. But come on. It's really, REALLY well done fan fiction.

Anyway, my person top 5 moments.

SPOILERS for the filmCollapse )

tl;dr: If you're interested in and able to contribute to a scholarship fund to help worthy undocumented H.S. students attend college, please click on the International Dreamers fund and make a donation!

Longer version: You guys will know that I don't post a lot of personal stuff here, but you see, I have this sister. (I know! I'm full of surprises!) Anyway, I am posting because my sister is a completely awesome person (much better than me in almost every way.) (Those of you who know me, picture my sister as me if I were, like, incredibly laid back and played bass guitar in a surf band. I know, you can't picture it, but I got all the nervous energy and she got all the musical talent.)

Anyway, my sister teaches at the International School, which is currently trying to raise money for college scholarships for undocumented students. The International School is an amazing place that exclusively serves recent immigrants to NYC from, literally, all over the world: my sister has students from Yemen, from Senegal, from Haiti, Gabon, Tibet--they are so amazing that the NYT did an article on them and Angelina Jolie was so moved by the article that she apparently was looking to tell their story in a movie. My fantastic and incredibly chilled out baby sister is always reading thick tomes about the culture and history of all these different parts of the world so she can literally understand who her students are and where they're coming from. It's incredibly incredibly challenging teaching because many of these students have absolutely no education from their own countries and aren't literate in their native languages, but here they are in New York City and they're 14 and so into school they go. These teachers are CRAZY HEROES.

And sometimes teachers and students working together manage to overcome these amazing challenges and these students get into college, sometimes really selective colleges-- but here's something they can't overcome: because of federal restrictions, undocumented students aren't eligible for any financial aid. So after all this work, some of them can get into college but can't pay for it!

So if you're in a place to donate to charity, please consider the International Dreamers fund! It's a worthy cause! End of PSA!

OTW Fannews: Collaborative playgrounds

  • It's not only communication between entertainment creators and fans that's becoming common, but also a creative dialogue. Anna Pinkert at Spinoff Online wrote about the benefits of embracing slash and other fan creations. "At a recent event, a reporter showed The Avengers star Mark Ruffalo a series of drawings of his character snuggling with Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark. He began giggling, and then even made up captions for one of the cartoons, “Would you like a gummy worm?” Better yet, he told the reporter, “I endorse [this art] 100 percent. You know what it is? It’s open-source creativity.” She suggests that "[h]omoerotic fan art might be a new signal that you’ve arrived in Hollywood. People know your face (and your abs) well enough to do 30 sketches of you embracing another star." At least some actors are ready to invite fans to play.

Elementarsquee!

I have a really big post in me about Elementary - I may have an article in me, actually, about Elementary - but I wanted to post something quick which elaborates on my comment to [profile] mononotlisa's meta about the finale, to wit (fast and sloppy, pardon all typos):

(Note – No Star Trek-related refs this week, I’m seeing it this evening and I don’t want to spoil myself!)

Regarding the finale of The Office, Los Angeles Times’s Robert Lloyd wrote Endings are hard, especially in a series whose very subject is that things go on much the same year after year. […] But we also crave official, canonical assurance that everything will be OK for the characters after we part. We can't just leave it to the fan fiction.

Also in the Los Angeles Times, Meredith Blake reported that Tony Goldwyn and Amy Schumer recently teamed up for a dramatic performance of some "Scandal" fan fiction they found on the internet, for “Watch What Happens Live.”

In “Embracing the culture of fanfiction” for DNA India, Neharika Nair wrote Anybody who has ever read or watched something has noticed that there are always a few questions left unanswered, or a few bits that they would change. And that is why fanfiction exists.

LPers, True Blood, Vampire Diaries, S.H.I.E.L.D., Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, magicians in New JerseyCollapse )

Game of Thrones, Matthew Barney, Potted Potter, Angelina JolieCollapse )

MIT’s The Tech’s Deena Wang interviewed Flourish Klink, who said I think there’s a lot of things that have changed since fandom moved off of LiveJournal and on to Tumblr. For about 10 years, fandom was really centered about LiveJournal. Moving to Tumblr has made a lot of changes in terms of how you get involved in fandoms, and how you can build communities or not. I think that fandom has become a lot more decentralized and there’s less of an emphasis on fanfiction now than there ever has been, and more of an emphasis on GIFs, on a lot more visual stuff. GIFs get a lot more traction because you’ve got a way to propagate images a lot more easily.

Finally, in a review of Christie Golden’s StarCraft II: Flashpoint for Forbes (FORBES??), Jen Bosier wrote The world of expanded universes is that of a mixed bag — so much of its legacy is owed to internet boards and forums, spawning from the dark art that is fan fiction. As an active writer and follower of fanfic, I would never naysay the art (and it is an art in its own right), but I’m not necessarily a fan of published fanfic. These offerings do firmly belong on the internet, and it’s always a disappointment to me when an game’s official EU is relegated to glammed up fanfic.
Why did Junior kitty take my step towel and stuff it in his catbox? It had to've been him, because he's the only big enough to pull it off.

on Elementary

Well, that finale made us SQUEEEEEE. Out loud. Our poor traumatized cats.

joonscribble called it last month and we were hoping, but I still can't believe that they actually did it!!! When the guy said "she", OH but we shrieked!

This totally makes up for BBC Sherlock's handling of Irene. So perfect~! Not only does it mean that Irene can remain The Woman and fundamental to Sherlock without at all interfering with Watson's absolute significance - but Irene did it, she defeated Holmes, completely. It was Joan who defeated her.

(For now. Her lawyer may have a difficult case, but given their client, they are going to be very, very motivated. Or else Irene might just decide to do her time and run her operation from a nice safe prison cell, like any good mastermind...)

(OH though, how much more do I want Watson to do Reichenbach instead of Holmes? It's so perfectly set up for it, since Moriarty is going to have a different target now...though as cesperanza pointed out, as it turns out she's already put Sherlock through the grief that Holmes traditionally subjects Watson to...)

Also, HE NAMED A BEE AFTER HER, AWWWWWW. Holmes & Watson forever & ever & ever <333

It's snowing again! SNOW. ING. And it's starting to stick on the ground. I'm just not going to think about it.

If you are in Forever Knight fandom, or interested in writing for it, signups for [community profile] fkficfest/fkficfest close at midnight Pacific time (but you have a grace period 'til morning to get your signup in!). The one year I did it, I really enjoyed it, both the writing process and the gift fic I received. I haven't felt close enough to FK in the years since to participate again, but it's a well-run, fun little exchange.

I need to write something for [community profile] month_of_meta if I'm going to! I'm really delighted that so many people have come back for Year 2 (or joined us anew!).

And I've made a good start on my wcpairings fic at last. I have a plot, and I know where I'm going. Now it's just a matter of getting there ...

... but I am so sleepy. Stupidly sleepy. I have been all day. Cannot concentrate on writing or anything else. Maybe I should have taken a nap. Maybe I should give up on being useful and go to bed.
